    codecs in browsers

I have mixed some sounds on my site www.ero.fi. I converted the CD-quality wav-file into a .wav-file with mpeg-1 codec. This combination made the file size small and it sounded OK.
This mpeg-wave-file worked also OK with MSIexplorer, but nothing was heard with Netscape. Netscape complained about the missing codec.
I made another conversion to a mp3-file and both MSIexplorer and Netscape were able to play the file.
I have understood that the browsers use the PC's default player when palying sounds but it ain't so?
How do the browsers play the sound?

    With best regards Timo
