Ripping from wav to mp3 increases volume level

It seems that all of my rips from wav to mp3 increases the volume level so that I need to then run the power pak volume quieten utility. When I load the files in CoolEdit 2000 the file is clipping. Is there anything that can be done to avoid this?

Is there anything special about these Wave files, are they PCM?

Try installing my player dAP - play one of the wave files, click on the spectrum analyser to swtich to scope and watch if the signal is clipping.

Are the audio files "mono", per chance??
