mp3 to aac (m4a) conversion

want to convert audio files from mp3 to m4a or aac.
Got new 5.1 speakers and found aac plays through all speakers, mp3 only 2 speakers.

Downloaded/installed the aac codex into dBp (latest version). Running the convert program and
neither m4a or aac shows as option under encoding....

what am i doing wrong?

ok, found out that apple will output aac format. not a fan of apple but ant port in a storm.
