    Transcoding

Is it still considered transcoding if you go from a lossless codec (flac, shn, ape) to a lossy? Shouldn't the end result be the same as if you rip from Wav? Since the wave file generated by unconverting a lossless should be identical to the original, the quality of the lossy should be the same, right?

It would be silly to have to uncompress to wav & then convert to Ogg or whatever...

    Re: Transcoding

Actually, it is transcoding if you go from lossless to lossy or even from lossless to lossless, you are changing formats.

But transcoding from a lossless to a lossy means just about the same thing as ripping a CD directly to a lossy, so it's alright.

Actually, I believe any kind of transcoding is alright, just don't do it 1000 times on the copy of the copy of the copy of the copy etc. If you always transcode from a high quality source, even if it's already from a lossy, you don't get that much degradation of the audio.
