Updated to latest version, errors converting AIFF to mp3

I had no issues converting AIFF to different sampling frequency AIFF. But when I try to convert AIFF files to mp3 I get errors:
    Error converting to mp3 (Lame), 'C:\Users\Ferrara\Desktop\New folder\podcast-intro.aiff' to 'C:\Users\Ferrara\Desktop\New folder\podcast-intro.mp3'
Error writing audio data to StdIn Pipe [clEncoder::EncodeBlock]
    Encoder created a blank file: C:\Users\Ferrara\Desktop\New folder\podcast-intro.mp3

    Error converting to mp3 (Lame), 'C:\Users\Ferrara\Desktop\New folder\podcast-music-mono.aiff' to 'C:\Users\Ferrara\Desktop\New folder\podcast-music-mono.mp3'
Error writing audio data to StdIn Pipe [clEncoder::EncodeBlock]
    Encoder created a blank file: C:\Users\Ferrara\Desktop\New folder\podcast-music-mono.mp3

    Error converting to mp3 (Lame), 'C:\Users\Ferrara\Desktop\New folder\podcast-outro.aiff' to 'C:\Users\Ferrara\Desktop\New folder\podcast-outro.mp3'
Error writing audio data to StdIn Pipe [clEncoder::EncodeBlock]
    Encoder created a blank file: C:\Users\Ferrara\Desktop\New folder\podcast-outro.mp3

    What am I doing wrong?

The source files, what bit rate, frequency and channel count are they?

Source files are 16/44.1 mono. Is the channel count the issue here?

What bitrate have you selected? because for mono you choose half the normal.

I typically use 128kbps bitrate for MP3 files and that is what I selected. Following your advice, I selected 64kbps and the same error occurs. Is there something I need to tweak in the advanced settings?

Try an older Lame version, it could be your security software is blocking it. It is the last option on the advanced page.

Just tried your settings and they work fine on a mono file.

I just tried both older Lame versions and neither one will work, same error message. My security software is Avast Free Antivirus, I don't think that is the issue here.

I mostly use Music Converter for changing bitrates or sampling rates on hi-res AIFF files, for example, when I download an album from Bandcamp and the files are different rates, I like the files for a given album to all be the same quality.

I only convert to mp3 for sending email attachments to a podcast author or friend, so I don't use it that often. I guess I could import the AIFF file to Audacity and choose to export as mp3 as a workaround, but I would like to get Music Converter to work properly for this simple task.

              What is this?:
Error writing audio data to StdIn Pipe [clEncoder::EncodeBlock]

It means something has blocked the program lame.exe from running. Try without the antivirus:

I am on Windows 10. Soon to get a new Windows 11 PC. Maybe I can create an exception in Avast. Usually if Avast blocks an app or website I get a popup telling me with the option to enter and exception for that site or app.

OK I just tried temporarily disabling all shields in Avast and now the converter works for mp3. Success!

Now I must see if I can create an exception so Avast will always allow this exe file to run.

I tried creating an exception in Avast using the filepath to the lame.exe file and it did not work. I can only convert to mp3 by disabling all shields in Avast. Must be a way to add an exception. Anyone offer advice on this?
Thanks, Spoon, for leading me to a solution.

Okay I think I have created the necessary Avast exception allowing me to convert to mp3 without disabling shields. I will post here in case any other Avast users run into the problem.

                      I had added the exception: C:\Program Files\dBpoweramp\encoder\mp3 (Lame)\Lame39925\lame.exe
                      but that did not work.

When I shortened the filepath to include all files in the encoder folder like this: C:\Program Files\dBpoweramp\encoder\*
                      it works now.

                      Thanks again for your help...
