correct method to convert files?

I want to convert my own cds to be played on my website. I need the files to be small. I've tried converting to wave, but still huge. How do I get them more compresses. Plus when I try to convert a cd, it can't read the file. Is there an easy or simple way to get music on my website?

If you install this:

Then you will get an mp3 compression option on the Wave 'Compression' page, that will give you small files.
