I think I was a bit misunderstood here. I wasn't looking to make each track the same playback volume with the lossy encoding, just retain some headroom while the file survives the lossy encoding to keep the original dynamics and tone. The original 24-bit, for eg., might have inter sample peaks that go above 0 dbfs once it's converted to a lossy format.
