Duration wrong

All the mp3's I've encoded have the wrong time duration showing (they always read too small) inside windows explorer (XP), they seem to be right inside the players though.

Any idea why? I use Lame VBR if that makes any difference.

That does make a difference. The support for MP3s in Windows Media Player and in Windows Explorer under XP is very buggy, and it doesn't properly support VBR or ID3v2 tags.

You're doing nothing wrong. It's Microsoft's fault, basically, and sadly there's very little you can do about it.
