Replay Gain - dB units, negative versus positive

I use Replay Gain to calculate Album gain. Sometimes the gain is expressed in negative dB units and other times positive dB units. Can someone please clarify negative versus positive? I'm thinking that if the album gain is -2.27 dB, it means that album is "too quiet" by 2.27 dB and that I could Volume Normalize it by boosting the volume using fixed gain @ 2.27. Do I have this right? Most live music I download is too quiet and has negative Album gains. I just ran across several that had positive values and it got me wondering if I understood this correctly.
    Thanks!

A minus dB value means the volume is decreased (album too loud), a positive value increases the volume.
