m4a thumbnails not displaying in Windows 10 explorer

    Hi guys

I recently bought a new Windows 10 computer. I transferred all my iTunes library over to it. All seems good except for some reason Explorer refuses to show the m4a thumbnail/album art for the many hundreds of songs. If I play them within Windows Media Player or iTunes the art exists and looks good. It's just the explorer view that is an issue. I can see album art on the folder preview but if I double click the folder containing m4a songs then it's just the standard windows music icon showing. Pretty irritating on a new machine which cost quite a bit. Strangely m4p protected files don't seem to have this problem. I am tearing my hair out trying to figure out what to do. I wondered if DB Power Amp can help here? Should Windows 10 be natively displaying the thumbnail or does it need some help? Is there a suggestion as to what I can do/install to maybe fix this? I have seen DB Power Amp referenced on a few google threads. I am prepared to give it a try but I am quite sensitive about my iTunes music library and do not want to risk unbalancing the iTunes Music Cloud Library that syncs across a number of our iOS devices. From an apple device perspective everything looks good but it's the Explorer Thumbnail view I am desperate to fix.

I also have a Windows 7 laptop and on here all the m4a music files show the thumbnails just fine. So it's puzzling as to why the new Windows 10 refuses to. Maybe I don't need DB Power Amp and something else is more suitable. I am open to suggestions.

    Many thanks,
    Wayne

I'm not following why you want to use dbpoweramp. It is a ripping/converting program and NOT a database/library program. I suspect your issue is a Win10 issue not an artwork issue. But in any case, you can download the free trial dbpoweramp program. It is full featured, but expires after some number of days. But again, it is not clear to me that anything about dbpa will solve your display problem.

Hi Gary, I just wondered does the software or one of the programs offer m4a codec support which may help with the thumbnail display issue? It seems flakey on Windows 10. I am not too familiar with DB Power Amp or the other programs but I have seen it referenced a few times in my google searches. That's why I just wanted to enquire if there was anything can be done to help through any of these. I basically need something that will take over responsibility from Windows for generating m4a thumbnails.

      Cheers

I doubt it does, but you could install the free trial as a test and see if it solves your problem.

It worked. thumbnails now show!!!!! Thank you, thank you. Question is now, I don't really want to open it up and risk unsettling the balance just yet. How do I buy it now? DO I have to re download or does one of the programs/utilities need to be opened. I downloaded the trial version link just to start

          Cheers

hmmm. Interesting. To buy just go back to the purchase page and purchase, download and install on top of the trial version.

All done. I am so grateful to you guys. The thumbnail issue was foremost but I am also so impressed with the speed of your responses. The edit id tag in the context menu is so convenient. I guess I've barely scraped the surface but it's already proved it's worth. Also in case any others have my problem they can now maybe find this thread on a google search as a way of fixing thumbnails in Windows

Great. You'll find that dbpa is an outstanding suite of programs for digital music.
