vbr, cbr or abr?

the help page says vbr is the preferred setting. Why? Wouldn't a higher constant bit rate of 320 not be better then a variable one at say 280. Is it a compromise between bit rate and file size?

When there are silent, largely empty, or very simple passages in the music, forcing 320kbps just wastes space and offers no advantage. Variable adjusts to the requirements of the actual data.
