Re: file wont convert to uncompressed flac after test conversion done on file
The support response from the FLAC team was as follows.
1) the commands to create a uncompressed FLAC file are not officially supported as they were only made available for development purposes.
2) ergo, no fix is forthcoming.

Re: file wont convert to uncompressed flac after test conversion done on file
I opened a support request. The problem is specific to the 20-bit stuff. If you change a 16-bit FLAC to a 24-bit file, it all works as advertised.Leave a comment:

Re: file wont convert to uncompressed flac after test conversion done on file
I have the same problem. It happens with HDCD files as well. And it seems pretty random. When I try to rip from CD and rip the same song repeatedly, I get different compression ratios every time. If this is a bug in FLAC, I'm more then happy to colaborate with you to get it fixed by Xiph. Thanks!Leave a comment:

I have not looked into the internals of FLAC to discover why, I not know sorry.Leave a comment:

Re: file wont convert to uncompressed flac after test conversion done on file
Thanks for your answer but..
Most of my 24bits succeeded in being "uncompressed", it's just a few of them for which it doesn't work.
And I am wondering why?
It seems to be related to low level volume portion of music whereunder a certain level it considers to be autorised to compress.
Am I wrong?Leave a comment:

It will do for 24 bit, it is not possible to disable compression for this bit depth.Leave a comment:

Re: file wont convert to uncompressed flac after test conversion done on file
So the question is:
Under which sound level does it consider that it is autorised to be compressed?
I mean, in the file used here, the music is calm acoustic music with high dynamics therefore some moments are rather low on volume but not digitally silent and, yes, the first 9 seconds contains mainly noise but that's not 32% of the file which is 8mn 35s long.
It is in such low volumes that it becomes difficult to get subtle reproduction of nuances in music.
And this leads to finally and essentially...why does it still compress when we specifically ask for none ? ;-)Last edited by Silences; August 02, 2014, 01:28 PM.Leave a comment:

Re: file wont convert to uncompressed flac after test conversion done on file
The file I have been using a regular download from Qobuz : François Salque - EST - For the example: Track Baikal when you download it it comes with a huge compression of 82%.
So I use the conversion tool to uncompress it and I still got 32%, I tried to convert it to wave and afterwards convert it back FLAC "uncompressed" and it went back to 32%Leave a comment:

I am inserting multiple posts because it seems that there is a problem with your server my long post went erased with message like "could no find file permission" when tried to reedit the post
Sorry for the inconvenience in reading.Last edited by Silences; August 02, 2014, 01:26 PM.Leave a comment:

Re: file wont convert to uncompressed flac after test conversion done on file
Hello all,
I have encountered the same issue, here is an example :
The first quadrant shows a 24bit uncompressed file that one is correcly uncompressed.
The 3 others show the "problem", I have started with a file compressed up to 82% ! an orginal file bought from Qobuz : François Salque - EST, I convert it to uncompressed and it goes to 32% not 0, then I convert it to wave and redo the test in the other direction WAV to FLAC and still gets the 32%.
My question is:
The file used here for the example is calm acoustic music with high dynamics therefore some moments are low on volume but not silent.
According to the remark hereabove it might be compressed due to digital which eqaul to total absence of soundLast edited by Silences; August 02, 2014, 01:05 PM.Leave a comment:

Re: file wont convert to uncompressed flac after test conversion done on file
Hi Spoon,
The files in question are 24 bit--- I forgot about that issue when converting to uncompressed flac. Thanks for setting me straight--- you are the best---sorry to have bothered you!!!!

Re: file wont convert to uncompressed flac after test conversion done on file
Certain flac files will compress, even with uncompressed, they are:
if they contain long spells of digital silence
if they are 24 bitLeave a comment:

Re: file wont convert to uncompressed flac after test conversion done on file
Hi,
The files still say eg. 30% compressed or 25 % compressed when I hover over with the mouse--- doesn't that mean they are compressed? The other files I processed without doing a test conversion first all say 0% compressed when I check them.Leave a comment:
