Multi Encoder to FLAC and Mp3? Or convert after first ripping to FLAC?

    Hi all

I'm still researching my ripping project (2500 CDs) and one of the things I'm not sure about is whether to use the multi encoder to rip to FLAC and mp3 at the same time, or to just rip to FLAC and then batch converter to mp3 once in a while.

Are there pros and cons to either method? Which one is favoured/most popular?

    Two thoughts I have:

    1. If using the multi encoder, if I want to change the metadata do I have to it for both the FLAC and the mp3 rip (do I have to do it twice)?

    2. If I batch convert to mp3 later down the road, is the metadata of the FLAC file automatically sent to the mp3 during the conversion?

But aside from these questions, general thoughts and suggestions would be most welcome and helpful.

    Many thanks

    Max

@garym. I've been reading in other threads how you rip to FLAC, THEN adjust the metadata if necessary, THEN batch convert to lossy at a later date.

In addition to my queries above, I'm curious as to what the advantages are in adjusting the metadata after the rip rather than before the rip?

    Cheers

It is often much easier to fix metadata pre rip, rather than post rip, especially if multi formats are being written.

Will be interesting to hear from garym in that case as to why he prefers his method...

No matter how much I try to make sure my metadata is corrected (manual editing) *before* the ripping, I typically see something I want to change after the fact. Particularly true with certain compilations or multidisk CDs. So for me, it is just easier to rip to FLAC, double check things (while the next CD on the stack is ripping), and then later on, run a batch conversion of the FLAC files to mp3 for my portables. This latter step is only a couple of mouse clicks and is otherwise automatic, so I can start this process after dinner or before bed, etc. without any monitoring. This said, if one is meticulous re fixing the metadata tags (if needed) before the ripping is started, then multiencoder works great.
