Opening up dBpoweramp Configuration > selecting Codecs tab > selecting "Advanced Options" > going to "Decoder Options" > "m4a / mp4 Decoder" > setting Output (AAC) to X bit, where X is 16, 24 or 32, has the unusual consequence of dBpoweramp to be reporting the same bit depth of every m4a file I select! (e.g. set Output (AAC) to 24 bit, now open up Properties of any m4a file and go to Audio Properties, and check Sample Size).
Isn't bit depth a property of the file and not of the decoder? While the output can be set to a higher bit depth than that of the file, if the file's bit depth is 16 bit, it doesn't magically turn it into 24 bit simply by setting the decoder to a higher bit depth.
