DmC Audio CD Configuration

Can somebody please explain to me what the differences are between the different options under Advanced Ripping Configuration Command Set (and CD communication for that matter). It is set to MMC by default, and since I have no problems with any ripping tasks, I should just leave well enough alone, but... we wouldn't be geeks if we did that. I tried switching to the NEC read because my drive is an NEC, but then is was unable to rip.

They are just their for the very old drives, such as early NECs that needed special commands to rip audio.
