wma file size

I've just read the guide to various formats on the site. It says wma files are smaller than mp3. However when I rip a CD track it pans out at approx 5 mb as an mp3, but 8 as a wma. I've got a phone that only reads wma, but puts an individual file size limit of 5 mb. Any suggestions how to get the size down without unduly sacrificing quality? (& why the files are bigger than mp3s?)

Rip menu >> Compression Options and select a lower Bit rate.
