only recording out of one speaker

anytime i try to record anything it only comes out of one speaker, so it only records one speaker. i just have my tape reciever hooked into my computer. if it isn't hooked up to a reciever would that cause it?

Your input might be the Microphone which is mono only.

how do i make the mic not my input

Possibly a different cable needed, or different socket on the PC or a different socket on the audio source - one of these (or all!) will be mono.
