    Increase volume after ripping

I have ripped several of my cds using the Apple Lossless (ALAC) codec, which produces .m4a files.

However, many of the songs are at a low volume.

I would like to increase the volume of my songs without impacting the fidelity and quality of the music as I want to listen to high quality lossless audio on my music system.

My files are stored on a NAS drive. I use a logitech squeezebox to stream the music to an Audio Research amp, which drives my speakers. I control the logitech with remote control software installed on my iPad.

    Questions:
Is there a way to increase the volume of all the ripped m4a files?
If so, by how much should the volume be increased such that it does not distort?
Will increasing the volume impact quality of the music in the m4a files?

    Thanks in advance for answers.

    Regards,
    Anand.

Add replaygain ID Tags (the squeezebox should be able to adjust the volume based on that).

Install the Replaygain utility codec from 'Codec Central' then convert all the files to this codec and the tag is added for each file.

Yes, Squeezeboxes can use ReplayGain tag info. In fact, I really like how they implement it. In settings, one can turn RG to OFF, to ON using Track GAIN, or to ON using SMART GAIN (SB automatically uses Track Gain if playlist is from different albums but ALBUM Gain if the playlist is a single album. Very nice!

        Thanks for this.

I also use Sonos to listen to music at times, at my office.

Will Replaygain be recognized by Sonos as well?

If not, what can I do that works for both Sonos and Squeezbox?

        Regards,

Yes. Sonos can use RG values. As far as I can tell it only uses TRACK GAIN. but this should work for you.
