Can't Read/Recognize .cda (audio cd) Files!

Yesterday I noticed that DMC Audio CD Input - as well as my Windows 98 File Explorer - no longer reads/recognizes my .cda (audio cd) files!

I tried installing other CD to MP3 ripper softwares, but got the same result: All of them could no longer read my .cda files.

I install/uninstall multimedia softwares quite frequently, so I suspect that my problem was caused by one of those processes.

What must I do to fix this?

Please note that my Windows98 CD Player, however, can still read and play audio CDs.

If windows does not show the CDA files then it is a hardware issue rather than software (possibly), what does explorer show when you select the drive with a CD Audio Disc inserted?

Explorer & CD Player Seem OK, BUT...

My CD Player can still read and play audio CDs. (Whew!) - The reason why I think it's not a hardware problem.

Although Explorer does recognize that presence of my CD ROM, it doesn't seem to recognize the .cda files on my CDs.

I read (from http://aspi.radified.com) that Windows 98 is supposed to have the ff. files:

windows\system\iosubsys\apix.vxd
windows\system\aspienum.vxd
windows\system\wnaspi32.dll
windows\system\winaspi.dll

Using Start -- Find -- Files or Folders, I discovered that MY SYSTEM DOESN'T HAVE the file, winaspi.dll (!)

Can this be the culprit (as to why any CD-to-MP3 Ripper software that I install wouldn't read the .cda files on my audio CDs)?

I've searched the 'net for how to restore this particular dll back into my system, but I couldn't find anything that helped me.

So, here I am again, yelling...

I went to http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc-support-audio-cd.htm, and followed the step-by-step instructions under "Windows 95/98 Specifics (ASPI)" -- I ran the ff. .exe files:

* Adaptecs ASPI Version Checker
* ASPI Drive Lister
* 3rd party ASPI update*
(The Adaptec ASPI 4.71 update didn't seem to agree with my system.
Instead, I used the 3rd party ASPI update.)

After running Adaptecs ASPI Version Checker again, this is the report that came out:

Then I ran the ATPI Drive Lister again, which yielded the ff. report:

"Init Returned: No Adaptors"

The status of my CD Player, Explorer and CD-to-MP3 Ripper softwares, etc. are the same as when I first posted my problem:

* My CD Player CAN read and play .cda audio CDs,
* Explorer recognizes the presence of my CD ROM, but fails to recognize
the .cda files,
* CD-to-MP3 Ripper softwares cannot read my CDs. i.e...
- Even with a CD is loaded, dMC Audio CD Input's interface
reads "insert audio CD."
- When running another program called Slow Speed CD Transcriber
(v.1.47), I get the ff. error messages: "Could not find any CD
devises," "ASPI reported 0 adapters," "DOS reported 1 CD devices,"
and the application quits automatically.

'Still hoping that you could help me. I hope the above infos help.

Those files:

windows\system\iosubsys\apix.vxd
windows\system\aspienum.vxd
windows\system\wnaspi32.dll
windows\system\winaspi.dll

do a search for each of them and rename them to .old, reboot (normal windows does not need them) then try the 4.72 install.
