Trying to convert Real Player RA files

hi, i recently purchased the dbpoweramp software and i am trying to convert some old files that are in the Real Player format to WAV files but the system wont do it - something about the format not being supported. Can anyone tell me what to do to get this to work.
    thanks and regards

Re: Trying to convert Real Player RA files

.ra files are a bit awkward. First, it is a container format. That is, the actual data stream might be one of many codecs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RealAudio*Codecs .

If you have a player that can actually play it, then you might try to find out what codec is used. For example VLC has a command for finding that (I think the key is Ctrl-J).

Then if you are lucky, you can transfer the data stream to another format without quality loss, in which case that is what you should do, rather than converting to e.g. mp3. ('lucky' meaning that maybe the codec is a widespread one like AAC)
