Just curious about converting to 5.1

    Hi,

Quite by accident, I converted some normal 2 channel CD music files to WMA 9.2 Lossless, VBR Quality 100, 96Khz, 5.1 channel 24bit VBR. Guess what? It not only did the conversion, but it appears to have created 5.1 discreet channels (at least while watching the VU Meter in Foobar and listening).

Is there some "intelligent" encoding going on here? Or is it just duplicating the stereo information?

    Thanks!Marcus

If dBpoweramp did the channel mapping it would send something like 50 or 75% to the rear speakers.

      Hi Spoon,

You are correct. I carefully watched the VU meters in Foobar. The left channel and left rear channel are identical except the left rear is about 75% amplitude. Right and Right Rear the same thing. The Center channel and LFE channel are also identical in amplitude. Not sure what information is going to the center and LFE channels.

Center might be a sum of L+R, LFE would be a sum also.
