Does converting cd mono to mp3 change the sound?

I have a large CD collection and I'm going to convert it to mp3 and then to my computer for various reasons. A lot of my older CD's are in mono and I have converted a few mono CD's in mp3. Now here lies the rub. I have noticed my mp3 converter is set by default as stereo. So have I messed up the sound or changed it in any way by converting the CD mono track to a stereo mp3 track?

Every audio CD is actually Stereo, even if the audio on both channels are the same.

mp3 is an efficient codec, if the left and right channels are the same / similar then that saving is used.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean. Does that mean if a convert a mono type cd to mp3 stereo does the sound stay the same?

The sound is always the same, yes.
