Distortion introduced when converting

I converted flac files to wav files AND increased volume by 12 Db , This introduced distortion. I then converted teh distorted wav files reducing teh volume by 12 Db but the distortion persists.
Any Idea

Also - Thefiles were ripped from CD into FLAC. The line in level was set at mid level so I was trying to increase the volume and convert to wav. All of my tests worked perfectly and I have subsequently repeated the tests. Unfortunately I then set the batch converter to 6,500 files and they all were distorted. Unfortunately I set the option to "Delete" so no longer have teh original flac files. :cry:

If the audio clips digitally this is a hard limit and will introduce distortion (ie if you increase the volume by something rediculous like 120 db it will be impossible to restore anything by later reducing the volume).

I increased the volume by 12 Db and this has subsquently worked in various tests. Its just when I ran the Batch Converter that the distortion was introduced.

You would have to look at the audio in an audio editor, before and after, also manually do a +12dB volume increase in the audio editor to see the result.

Audacity is a good start.
