    File Selection - Deep Structure

I'd like to run a conversion on about 4500 files. They are stored in a deep directory structure \Music\<artist>\<album>\<track>.APE.

I'd love to point dMC at \Music and tell it to convert all APE files in all subdirectories. Is there a way to do this?

I can only find the typical Explorer multi-select in a single directory. If I have to do this for all 400 albums, it is gonna be painful!

    TIA

*Almost* solved my own problem. If I do a Start/Find and tell it to search \Music, for my APE files, I get an Explorer window where right-clicking *should* present the "Convert To" context menu.

So, let's consider this thread complete and see the thread "dMC Crashes on 800+ File Selection" for ideas on that issue.

Again File Selector is needed, you can untick all other types apart from APE and select all the folders in 1 click.

        Thanks for the reply.

You say "you can select all the folders". I can select all the files in a folder, but when I select multiple folders using the file selector, clicking on the Open button navigates me to the last of the subfolders.

I think I may not have explained what my situation is clearly enough. I don't have a single directory in which my source (APE) files live. I have 400-500 directories (representing 400-500 albums) in which my source files live.

I've got a folder named MUSIC, which contains 30-40 subfolders named after the artists in my collection, and each artist subfolder contains one or more subfolders for each of the albums by that artist.

I can see how to use the file selector to navigate to one of those directories and then to select all of the files in the one directory. If I have to repeat that process for all 400 directories, ummm, well, I think I'm going to have to start doing some coding myself (which is a scary thought).

Is there a way to point the file selector to a *folder* that contains 500 subfolders, and tell it to select all files in all folders beneath?

        TIA

there is a solution to every problem :D

Spoon, if I could add one thing to "arrang music" it would be that "arrange music" would/could also create the the folders by "album" name or "artist" name.

then all you have to do is fire up MMC and scan your music file directory. then click on "type" colum in MMC so all your ape files are together. then highlite all your ape files, then right click-->convert to-->arrange music-->

as there is an option to select the folder which to put the arranged music i would imagine it could also create the folder based on the id tag album name.

          did that make any sense?

as when ripping, dmc will create the folder as an album name. same thing here

ok i just realized that won't help in this case as it's only arrange music not converting as well.

              ok this will work.

MMC --> add a folder of music-->select your music folder

also check the "new track preferences" for more options before you do any directory scanning. also check on "collection"-->preferences-->and select search subfolders.

then just select the "type" colum in MMC.
then highlite all your ape files then right click convert to. after you select the codec you want to convert to just make sure you select "output to" "same folder as original".

in this case all the new converted files will end up in the same location as the original.

is this method of any help on what you want to do?

as a rule of thumb always do some test files first before doing the whole lot so you can make sure it's doing what you want.

I'm starting to think that maybe I'm missing something fundamental. You say:

MMC --> add a folder of music-->select your music folder

I click on an icon labeled "dBpowerAMP Music Converter". I immediately see a dialog box titled "Select Music File(s) to Convert". I don't have anything that will "add a folder of music".

Did I neglect to download something? Perhaps there is a package in addition to the dMC package?

                  Thanks again for the help!

kleinfelter, download dMC File Selector and install it. It should create a shortcut with that name on the desktop (or start menu). Use it, not the dMC Music Converter directly.

Doh! OK. I thought that the file selector = the dialog I got when I ran dMC and got the add files dialog. Now I see that it is a separate application.

As Miss Emily Latella (sp?) used to say, "Never mind."

                      Thanks for the patience.
