converting to mp3 wav loses ~4 seconds

When I convert a wav or aiff file (60 mins) to mp3 (FHG) the mp3 says it is 3-4 seconds shorter. When I use LAME, it still says 60 minutes, but MS stereo is turned on.

Are there any other options for FHG or for Lame to turn off MS stereo? Or what is MS stereo?

    Thanks

itunes shows it as 1 hour exactly, as does vlc

if i play it in itunes, it will play for 1 hour

but when i play it using windows media player 12, it stops at 59:57. and when i run mpgtx on it, it says the estimated duration is 59:56.97s

when i convert from mp3 back to wav and aiff, the wav/aiff shows as 1 hour in length

i was (am) trying to convert an aiff to mp3.

It is likely it is just the estimation of the length of the file which is incorrect.
