Speed of batch conversion - much data

I am converting 13.000 files through batch converter. I use two external USB disks. (using NAS over the network takes weeks). (Apple Lossless to Flac incldung album art processing)

When I start the job it indicates about 30 hours work and speed 40-60 times.

After 10 hours running it indicates 50 hours work and conversion speed 10-20.

Should one split up the job in smaller batches? or something else....or just leave it?

    You could try smaller batches.

what I do is convert them on my local drive THEN move them to the remote drive. Granted 13k will still take you about 7 or 8 hours (depending on cpu) but its better than 60.
