    Converting 320kbps to VBR??

I must start by saying i absolutely adore dbpoweramp, i have used so many programmes over the years but finding this was like a revelation, GOOD WORK!!

I have started to run out of space on my ipod, i have a massive music collection and alot of it I have had to just accept won't be on my 80gb ipod, but it's got to the stage now where I can't make any more room for music that really must appear on my ipod.

I've converted a few albums from 320kbps to -v 0 VBR and I save around 30mbs an album so this seems like a clever step forward. I've listened to the two bit rates back side by side and can't really hear a difference in quality but this is something I would want to explore more of before converting everything.

I was wondering if anybody has any input? As anybody done this before? How did it go? If i'm correct I understand converting lossy to lossy (mp3 to mp3) no matter the bitrate will result in a loss but I'm wondering how measurable a loss this will be. Like I say I have listened to the 2 versions of a track back through good 5.1 speakers and headphones and can't really hear a difference but when I do hear a difference I'm not sure if it's my head playing tricks on me .

Does anybody know of a more advanced way of checking the difference between the 2 bitrates or does anybody know more about how much of a loss I am resulting in converting this way.

Though I mentioned size, quality is my priority so if you guys can give me some idea that would be bril :D

Much love to the dBPoweramp world!

The quality loss would probably be minimal, AFAIK anything above 224 Kbps is transparent, so 320Kbps >> -v0 should not be detectable.

Cheers Spoon, I'll give it a go on some more albums.

Do you know of a better way to compare the tracks other than listening to them side by side?

That is the only way as lossy codecs have perceptual encodings, that is you cannot compare spectrum plots or trace images.

Thanks again Spoon, I'll stick to what i'm doing. I've been struggling researching into this online but you've made it very clear!

          All the best

cyphera9, you may want to check out MP3 repacker for a lossless way to save some space. Your millage may vary of course.
