Is it necessary to enable this function for the conversion?
I just want to convert some flac's into apple lossless for listening in itunes and on my ipod.

If you are not changing the frequency then it would not be used.

What do you mean with frequency? The sample rate?
What happens if I turn it on - maybe I shoud use it to get rid of the distortions by changing the sample rate?

Frequency and Sample rate are the same yes.

If you have distortions prior to a frequency conversions, switching it on will not help.
