can't read from cd

Hi,
What does it mean when dbpoweramp gives me this error message upon trying to rip a cd:

"The file 'xxxx' could not be opened. Read Table of Contents failed - audio disc in drive?"

This seems to be an intermittent error.

I'm no expert in this area but"Read Table of Contents failed" would alert me to a damaged TOC on the cd itself.

is the cd very scratchy and or look damaged? and is it an original cd or a copy?

Have the same problem. I think the ToC of intentionally mis-built, so that ripping would be harder.

It could be some sort of copy protection. I know some games have illegal TOC on CDs to prevent copying.
