hi newbie here, small prob with the aux input mode?

hi, firstly this program is the nuts!!

right, when im recording from my MD everything is fine and works ok but when i try to record from my hifi i.e cd or radio the volume in the 'volume test' bit wont go down to the optimal level even when i turn my hi fi vol right down, does anyone know what the problem is, i hope it gets resolved cos i cannot wait to record straight off the radio and burn it to cd to listen to in my car :smile2:

    thanks alot in advance

How are you taking it out of the HiFi? through the headphones socket?

if your taking it from your "line out" to your "line in" in your sound card it should be fine.

double check your multimedia properties as that's where problems with the setup usually occur.

        you on win98 or XP?

Re: hi newbie here, small prob with the aux input mode?

I have a similar problem with the (darn fine) Aux Input. I'm running a cable from the tape output of my preamp to the Aux/Line In 2 input of my XP SP2 PC (with Realtek AC97 on-board sound). I find that I have to turn the input level down to between the first and second of the seven gradations within Volume Control to avoid overload when transferring from vinyl, but can't find a comfortable level to cope with the higher output from cassette. (I've had similar difficulties when trying to transfer using Sound Recorder in the bad old, pre-Aux Input days, which suggests my hardware could be at fault.) I've tried taking the output straight from my cassette deck, just in case my cranky old preamp is the source of the problem, but to no avail. I've also had a look at the audio settings in Control Panel and nothing obvious leaps out. Any assistance or suggestions you can provide would be appreciated.

Thanks for your swift reply. I've downloaded the latest DMC, and will see if it makes any difference - always good to be running the latest version anyway. However, I have a sinking feeling that it's just the way the on-board audio on my PC is, although I have no idea what application HP envisage for it that requires such ridiculous amounts of gain.

              Thanks again.

the only other thing to double check is all your volume sliders. as there are 3 different ones. in my case there is anyway.

                1. the volume control in the task bar (which is just the master volume)
                2. in multimedia properties/audio "wav" volume slider
                3. aux or line in slider volumes

Sometimes in windows volume control is an advanced option that allows things such as gain to be switched off (it is manufacturer dependant).

Thanks again for your responses. In investigating your suggestions I've discovered that a) clicking on the speaker icon when testing the record level brings up the Recording Control levels, and b) using my mouse wheel I can ratchet the level down low enough with sufficient granularity to make transferring music from cassette a possibility. Your assistance is greatly appreciated, again - cheers!
