    Problem with utility codec

I have installed most of the utility codecs.

If I want to use AudioDetails, I can select it in the drop down list.
If I want to calculate and add ReplayGain tags, I can't see the ReplayGain utility codec in the drop down list.

    Why?

I just want to add tags to an existing file.

PS: Could you give me a hint as to where in the m4a-file I can see if it is a ALAC encoded file? Is it in an atom or...?
    Regards

    Re: Problem with utility codec

to add replaygain tags to the file you select "convert" but instead of selecting a codec (like FLAC or mp3lame) you select REPLAYGAIN. This will scan the files and add the replaygain tags.

p.s. i assume you have the replaygain codec installed.

      Well, that's my problem.

I think I have it installed.
At least I can use replaygain in DSP effects.

I'm not sure I completely follow you here. The ONLY place to use replaygain is as a DSP effect. You set it as a DSP effect when ripping or when converting. And if you already have the files, you "convert to" the DSP effect. Your comment seems to imply that you're missing some option to use replaygain. Don't let the "convert to" or the label "dsp" throw you. It is not re-converting the audio or adding any DSP effects to the audio itself. The replaygain DSP is merely adding tags. Sorry if I misunderstood your comment above....just wanted to be clear.

          Yep, that's it.

I'm missing the replaygain option in "ConvertTo".
Also there is no replaygain dll in the folder encoders.

          Anybody knows what's wrong?

Install it from Codec Central (utility codecs near the bottom)

              Thanks, Spoon.

I'm pretty sure I did this before.

              Anyway, it's working now.

You want to write your own program to detect ALAC? it is complex, yes in one of the sub atoms (the structure is dependant on format), but there is an ALAC identifier

                  Hi Spoon

I already have an AudioPlayer that plays mp4/m4a + m4a (alac).
What I need is to figure out which type because I need to select the appropiate dll (BASS).

I already access the file reading atoms, but I can't find the exact specs for the alac atom.
Is it safe to assume, that the file is encoded in ALAC, if the alac atom(s) exists?
                  Regards
