I use DMC w/Lame 3.98r to convert ape or flac files to mp3 for use on a DAP. I generally do a 2-step process wherein I first convert the lossless file to wav (perhaps unneccessarily) then wav to mp3, @ 320 CBR. Recently I note that the finished mp3's have very brief (<1 sec.) artifacts, like a skip with mechanical noise, occuring perhaps once or twice per 30 minutes of correctly encoded music. The waves are error-free. I encode on "slow," have made no changes in my computer hardware, and do not multi-task when encoding. If I note the error and go back to the source wav, then re-encode it to mp3 the artifact is either gone or in a different place in the resulting mp3 music file.
This is becoming frustrating as the errors are while never very prominent, I am a bit of a perfectionist with my music and would like to consistently produce a perfect, artifact-free encode.
Any suggestions would be welcomed.
Thank you.
