varaible bit rate vs constant bitrate

does variable sound just as good? It seems to sound fine to me other than taking twice as long to rip. The file sizes seem to be smaller than a constant 192 bitrate. Is there a way to determine the best settings for the variable bitrate? I set it between 64 and 224 (I think) but when it plays it's almost constantly at 154 or 163 so I thought maybe there was a better setting.

If you use variable with a higher max bit rate the quality can be greater than CBR for same file sizes.
