Replay Gain Usage

Hello,

my question ain't new, and i *DID* make a search in the forums.

They were many answers about it, but i suppose my low english skill prevent me from getting the picture.

My scenario:

Music CD -> Flac -> MP3

Can anyone explain me in easy english how to apply replay gain to the procedure so i have Flac tagged at ripping time, and how to apply it (confused about the options).

Than, *IF* i want to convert a replay gain tagged flac file to MP3 (not all my flac files are intented to), what to do at conversion time. And what about the multi encoder plugin (rip and encode to flac and MP3 at the same time).

Sorry for the noise, but i'm totally lost.

Replaygain would not transfer from FLAC, as the levels of mp3 are different - you would need to run the DSP effect ReplayGain again.

Replaygain can work with track gain only when using the multi-encoder.

Album uses all the tracks from the album so quiet tracks on an album stay quiet

so if I understand correctly :

CD Rip -> Flac:: both track and album option in replaygain via dsp
CD Rip -> Flac & MP3 via multi-encoder plugin:: track and album option in replaygain for Flac, track option for MP3 in DSP
CD Rip -> MP3::track and album option in replaygain
Flac -> MP3:: only track option.

Am I right?

No FLAC would not have album gain here

Here you can have album gain also.

so to sum up & the archive to help people wondering as I do.

1) CD Rip -> Flac:: both track & album replaygain option via DSP

2) CD Rip -> Flac & MP3 via multi-encoder plugin:: track option in replaygain for Flac AND MP3 in DSP, not use of album tag

3) CD Rip -> MP3:: track and album option in replaygain

4) Flac -> MP3:: track & album options in mp3 DSP.

Can it be the definitive setup and close the thread?

just to complete the thread as i forgot to ask :blush::

i have a bunch of already ripped FLAC and MP3 files.

I'd like to apply replaygain on them with the batch converter.

What are the option for flac and MP3 files (track and/or album replaygain)?

both track and album option in replaygain via dsp?
track and album option in replaygain via dsp for FLAC, only track for MP3?

You can do both track and album gain. As the files already exist you need to install [Replay Gain] Utility codec from codec central:

Then convert to >> [Replay Gain]

thanks for the explanation.

Seems in fact that replay gain can be applied to all conversion except for multiencoder, that can't do album replaygain.

Just puzzled about the fact you said "As the files already exist you need to install [Replay Gain] Utility codec". How can replaygain be applied without it?

Because the files exist (even mp3 files) you do not want to decode the mp3 files, and re-encode as mp3 as slight quality is lost when this is done, as you already have mp3 files with out replaygain tags you can use the [ReplayGain] utility codec to calculate on the existing files.
