vista recording?

Vista 32/64 bit system w/SP1.
Creative X-FI Xtreme gamer sound card.
Cassette player with Headphone output.


I have some old cassettes that i want to get recorded onto
my HD (then to CD's).

I have my cassette player hooked to my PC using Headphone
output to the PC Microphone input.

First - will the above hookup work?

Since Aux is not available, can someone suggest (perfer
a free one) a recording program that will handle this?

I believe Audacity works, though since I do not use this personally I cannot tell you for sure either way.

I keep seeing that.
According to their Help screens, i have to use the Mixing toolbar to select
the input source. OK, great except that its always greyed out with no
selection possible. I do have the Mic, Line-in and WhatUHear enables
and available......

Anyone?

well, audacity works in XP, Showed all the devices good.

But vista still has the device selections greyed out. Any
suggestions?

I have a Creative X-Fi that is also showing "What-U-Hear" as a recording selection, but it says "Not available", so I still think it is something artificial MS has done.

You have to set it as your default device (it should also be set as default
in both playback and recording). The speakers must be powered up and
connected.

What X-Fi driver version do you have?

Audacity finally turned on a recording device - "Master Volumn" only.
Needed to select both input and output devices as "What U Hear". Works
pretty good for wav and mp3 I/O but not as good as Aux. I did have to
download a "Lame for Audacity" file and put it in the Audacity folder.
