Das is kaput I suspect

Today I attempted to rip 2 new CDs, in Secure mode. Both quickly passed through the first pass, went CPU encoding, which stayed locked on 0%. One then showed errors for every track ripped and I aborted the rip. The other just stayed locked on 0% for the first 2 tracks.
I then used Windows Media Player to rip one of the CDs as a Wave, (like rubbing two sticks together), then attempted to convert to mp3. The usual dialog appeared indicating progress then disappeared after 2 or 3 seconds. This happened twice.
Nothing has changed in my configuration, I even uninstalled and reinstalled with no change in the dMC's behavior
Both CDs play fine on an audio CD player and I was able to successfully rip one with WMP so it is not the CDs or the burner at fault. I suspect my dBMC (R13.1), and the CD ripper, have bitten the dust.
I am forlorn and need consolation and advice.:cry:

Uninstall, reboot, then reinstall dbpoweramp.

I have tried uninstalling (including using the dB uninstall utility), rebooting, reinstalling and still get no joy in ripping or conversion.
I have been queried about AV and anti spyware apps, I don't think either is the cause - all such apps were in place at least a month before any problems became apparent (I replaced AVG anti spyware with Malwarebytes late 2008 when support for AVG stopped), most for much longer.
This has continued with installation of a replacement copy (thanks Illustrate)
And something weird is going on, other apps which should rip or convert are also going awry. I cannot rip or convert with Foobar, and NCH Switch (not my preferred app) is also unable to convert files.
When this first became a problem I reinstalled Windows Media Player 11, as I had previously disabled its ability to search the Internet for album info - I like it as a media player, I don't want it managing my life - another of Mr Gates products trying to convince you it knows better. Now WMP is the only thing I have that will rip a CD, is it possible that Windows Media Player is somehow obstructing other apps? Sounds a bit like grasping at straws but I am out of (more plausible) ideas.:(
dMC has been the mainstay of managing the music I have on my computer, ripping, converting and tagging, and without it I feel lost, especially as any possible replacements seem inferior, or seem afflicted in the same way as dMC.

Other programs would not effect each other, only drivers, security software and SCSI filters could effect ripping.

Hmmm ...
Well I have installed no drivers around the time that the problem began.
For the record I am using Symantec Corporate AV, Spybot S&D, and Malwarebytes. Symantec and Spybot have been on the computer for quite some time, Malwarebytes for around 1 and a half months. I was using AVG anti spyware, but that is no longer supported as a free standing app, and Malwarebytes looked a good candidate to replace it. These are updated and used weekly or thereabouts. Both Spybot and Malwarebytes only do something if I run a scan, and neither has found anything to report for some time. Symantec does operate in static mode, or when I run a scan, and either way it tells me if it has quarantined or deleted something it does not like. Again it has reported no issues for some time.
And as for SCSI filters, I don't know what that is, well not exactly. But I have no SCSI filters, I get asked when I reinstall Windows, and I say no.
So it appears we are out of ideas, again.:yawn:
I have just done a system restore to the day before problems arose, then deleted dMC, including running the little reset utility. I have rebooted and am going to reinstall dMC.
I will post my results once I have reinstalled and attempted a rip and a conversion (the tag editor is still working fine, go figure).

All of the above has made no difference.
Seeing I am adamant that security software is not the issue, how do I search my system to see if there are any SCSI filters installed?

Are you referring to the Microsoft Guided Help, and removing all CD burning software, Nero in my case? Should I also removed DVD shrink?

Not really, these fiters can be installed by any program, even hidden ones (think Sony Copy Protected CDs). It is good to get a listing of the filters and check out each one.

I Googled SCSI filters, and the first hit was this thread ... unaccustomed as I am to public speaking ...
Seriously I will check these out properly and see what is on this computer.
What sort of drivers do you have in mind? I have installed no hardware recently do unless a driver has updated, which is unlikely, don't know if that could be the problem.

I have found a couple of sites which say to look for Upper and lower filters in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
2. Expand SYSTEM, and then expand CurrentControlSet.
3. Expand Control, and then expand Class.
4. Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
5. In the details pane of Registry Editor, on the right side, click UpperFilters.

I have no upper or lower filters in any entry for {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Any other suggestions?

There are multiple instances of that key under Class, find the one that references CD/DVD drives on the right side to make sure you are on the right one.

I have had a look at the registry entry for CD/DVD drives, no mention of upper or lower filters.
Also there is a guided help thing downloadable from Microsoft, see the link Spoon posted. I have run this little gizmo and it found no such filters on my computer.
Clean install looking likely.:cry:

Well, where to start?
After finding 3 instances of an upper filter in that part of my registry, I removed them - and disabled the keyboard and mouse.
So I now have a reinstalled Windows, all of the possibly offending software, and a working version of dBpoweramp Music Converter. A rather radical solution.
Thanks to Spoon and Lt Data for suggestions, and to Illustrate for supplying a new registered copy of the app.
The frustrating thing is that no one will ever know what the real culprit was.

I seem to have developed a similar problem. Today I was converting some FLAC files to .mp3 (which I have done many times with no problem) and the converter would not work. I did everything I could and still no conversion.
I uninstalled and rebooted and reinstalled and the same thing still happened.

Later in the day I received a CD in the mail and I tried to rip it and the ripper would not work either.

I uninstalled and rebooted and then reinstalled again and there was no change.

I tried ripping with Windows Media Player and it did fine. I tried downloading another converter (Switch) and it did the FLAC to mp3 conversion all right (sorta).

While these both worked I don't like using them. I have used dBPowerAmp for years and I much prefer it to anything else. The problem is, is that it doesn't work anymore.

Is there any solution?
