Error chunk 0 length with Apple Lossless files?

    Hi!
Im trying to convert some files from Apple Lossless to FLAC, the files play ok in VLC (im not using itunes).
When i try to convert them i get flac files that are 464 miliseconds (everyone)
and a couple of hundred KBs (mostly around 200KB)

    here is an example:

Error converting to FLAC, 'D:\-[ Rock ]-\-[ Nirvana ]-\With The Lights Out\CD3\3-07 Moist Vagina (Demo).m4a' to 'D:\-[ Rock ]-\-[ Nirvana ]-\With The Lights Out\CD3\3-07 Moist Vagina (Demo).flac'
    Error chunk 0 length. [clMP4Handler::ScanFile]

"Chunk 0 length", sounds like the file contains no audio but it does.

I have also tried "Optimize m4a" but then i get this additional info:

Information converting to Test Conversion, 'D:\-[ Rock ]-\-[ Nirvana ]-\With The Lights Out\CD3\3-07 Moist Vagina (Demo).m4a' to 'D:\-[ Rock ]-\-[ Nirvana ]-\With The Lights Out\CD3\3-07 Moist Vagina (Demo).IGNORE'
ALAC: Could not find 'trak' chunk, file does not contain audio [ALACDEC::DecendIntoMOOVChunk]

"file does not contain audio" seems to confirm the above hypothesis of "chunk 0 length"
but again the files DOES contain audio and are the size of normal lossless audiofiles.
Could they somehow be of another format or incompatible with dbpoweramp?

    Can anyone clarify this?

Thank you for a very good program!

Where did these ALAC files come from? Do they play in iTunes?

I recently converted about 200 files from Apple Lossless to FLAC, and they worked fine. Absolutely no error messages. Some of the Apple Lossless files were created with CD Ripper, some were created with iTunes. No issues either way.

What happens if you try to open the Apple Lossless file in iTunes? Do you get the same error message?

If not, it's possible that reconverting ALAC -> ALAC within iTunes will fix the bad header (as I assume this is what it is).

              reconverting within Itunes helped...
probably a bad header issue then!

thank you so much for all the help everyone!

This came up a year or two ago when some users were reporting problems with dBPowerAmp's implementation of the Apple Lossless codec, in regards to gapless playback. Resaving the file within iTunes fixed it.

Apple would make this whole thing a lot easier if they would just give away the code for ALAC. (That, plus making it easy to play back FLAC within QuickTime.)

I have taken a look at the file, it seems as though there are lots of 000000000000's at the end of the file, I will adjust our code to be more forgiving.
