    incorrect length

    Hi,
I've been using dbpoweramp for awhile and have noticed that sometimes the length of the song would be incorrect.

I first noticed when playing back mp3's on the iPod that certain songs would be clipped off. Today I noticed that all of these files have in common is that when they are ripped they get an id3 v.2 written. My setting when ripping cd's is VBR 160-256
Some albums I ripped today where Smashing Pumpkins/Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness, and The Sundays/Reading, Writing And Arithmetic which both require id3 v2 tags for the album title. Sometimes the length is only off by a second or two, but sometimes it's off by a minute.

It is the id3v2 tag, you can set dMC to never create such in 'dMC Configuration'

Is this a problem with the tag or with dbpoweramp?
I have also used Exact Audio Copy and I haven't
had this problem. I believe they use ID3v2.4.

It is a well known problem with ID3v2 and VBR files.

I'm having some trouble with this one too: I'm using Winamp3, which seems to have incomplete support for Ogg Vorbis tags and such so I decided to convert my Ogg Vorbis files to Mp3 and did it with the newest version of DMC. Most of the pieces are OK and all of them play correctly, but some of them have very incorrect lengths (for example, an about four minute song shows as 72 mins!). The files are 160kbit/s CBR with both id3v1 & id3v2 tags.

Is there an easy and quick way to correct the length stamps (and I'm not gonna buy Power Pack for this!)? I've really got plents of those files so correcting them by hand one by one isn't really an option (and heck, I don't even know how to do it!!!). I've tried removing the v2 tags in Winamp but it's no good.

BTW, I have some similar files encoded with CDEX using the same Lame encoding library (well, they're VBR but that shouldn't change anything). How come these files don't show any errors like this? There has to be something wrong with DMC too.

...well, there seems to be problems with at least the all-buggy Winamp3. The older versions can correct the lengths by themselves. Version 2.81 seems to show the lenghts correct but version 3.0c relies blindly on the information given by the tags. And still removing the id2 tag doesn't work, even if I remove the track from the playlist and then re-add it or reload its info.

So I'm probably moving to the Nullsoft forums with this subject and kick someones butt a little 'round there about it. Sorry for the inconvenience...

But I'd still need a way to correct the lenghts in the files, 'cause the wrong lenghts are causing me headache in Winamp3. And, even with the truckloads of bugs in it, it's still the best media player there is and I don't want to change it. And, for the future, at least I know I shouldn't use id3v2...

Or get mp3Trim or MP3 Surgeon and allow it to Re-create VBR seek information. If anyone else knows of utilities that will re-create VBR seek info, please let me know. mp3Trim is size limited in the freeware version and too daggone expensive to buy.

Lame does not add the Xing header when ID3v2 tags are used. Removing the v2 tag will not fix this. You have to either re-encode or use software like mentioned above.

I was thinking of some sort of warning to people who did not know this, either when selecting VBR in the Advanced box, or when selecting Tag creation in the DMC config. What do you think Spoon? Can you save us from ourselves?

I think Lame does create the header, it is just ID3v2 pushes it up a little and most mp3 decoders do not look so deep.

Perhaps. I am almost certain that I remember reading about just such a problem on the MP3 Encoder mailing list. Perhaps it was an older version and has been fixed.

I know EncSpot can't find them. I did some tests and found this to be the case with Lame 3.92

I need to upgrade dBPA's lame encoder to 3.93 and try it again, I guess.
