Speed - Ripping .cda to MP3

My two optical drives are listed below. Both have DAE ratings around 23X-25X.

It is taking me about 11-13 minutes to rip a 60 minute .cda audio CD to 128 kbps MP3's with either of these drives.

Even though I have the optical drives on a different IDE channel than my hard drives, dBPowerAMP 9a rips in bursts. I have optical and hard drive activity for 2 sec, then nothing, then activity for 2 sec, then nothing.

I do not have PowerPak installed.


I'm looking for an explanation, and maybe some recommendations.

Converting to mp3 will take the most time, if for example you ripped to an uncompressed format it would proabbly finish in 2-3 minutes.

The pause you are experiancing, it rips then sends the data to be compressed, rips some more, etc...

There is an option in the Power Pack called 'Rip to Ram' and 'Encode at Same Time' these will get rid of that delay.

Does this sound about right with my system?

Here's what the "PowerPack" difference is for my system:

With Rip to Ram + encode at the same time: 8 min. - 56 sec.
No PowerPack: 11 min. - 32 sec.

Difference: 2 min. - 36 sec.

About a 22% improvement in rip time.
