Shuffle can't play m4b files converted using dbPowerAmp

I have converted an MP3 file to m4b and transferred it to an iPod Shuffle using iTunes. However the Shuffle is unable to play it. I tried different bit rates with no success. The reason I want to use m4b format because the shuffle can create bookmarks for it so I can resume the audio file any time.

I also tried m4a with no success. Does the shuffle require a very specific type or what's the problem?

Try the m4a Optimize codec (in codec central), or update the shuffles firmware to the latest.

The software version is 1.0.4 according to iTunes and up to date. I assume that's the firmware.

I used M4a optimize and it had no effect. Actually I have used dbPowerAmp to convert MP3's to aac, m4a and m4b (apple formats) and none of the files worked. I have used also other converters and same problem.

I can only play MP3 files or aac files converted by iTunes.

If you convert one of your mp3 files to mp3 with dMC, can the shuffle play that? How are you loading your songs on to the Shuffle, using iTunes?
