Because the format is dead in the water, supporting it involded nasty hacks using a Winamp decoder (which really messed with standard mp3 decoding) and an encoder which was even worse.Comment

Ok thanks, I understood about it being dead, but didn't realise it was so hard to port. I guess I will have to keep my current collection as mp3PRO & any new stuff just convert to he-aac. Unless I find another program that will convert my collection keeping the tags + album art intact. I do hope that last.fm do get around to supporting id3v1 tags.Comment

There is no logical reason to keep only id3 v1 tags, they are so limited and unless you have old/specific hardware that does not support id3 v2 tags, then I'd suggest using mp3tag or any number of other programs to update to id3 v2.
btw, I'm pretty sure that id3v1 tags do not support album art anyway.
