MPEG Layer-3 not listed under Format / Different format lists

A friend of mine is having problems finding the MPEG Layer-3 format in the Settings Button dropbox, under converting to Wave Settings.

What format shows up are:
ADPCM
CITT A-Law
CIRR u-Law
GSM 6.10
IMA ASPCM
Lemout & Hauspie CELP 4.8 Kbit/s
Lemout & Hauspie SBC 12 Kbit/s
Lemout & Hauspie SBC 16 Kbit/s
Lemout & Hauspie SBC 8 Kbit/s
Microsoft ASPCM
PCM

He is using a laptop, and Microsoft Vista Home Basic o/s

I had him check and he is a registered r12.4 user. The configuration page shows registered and that the MP3 Licence and Musepack is registered.

Any ideas as to why his format page is differnet than the one I have?

My format page is somewhat different: As follows:
ACELP.Net
CITT A-Law
CITT u-Law
DSP Group Truespeech(TM)
GSM 6.10
IMA ADPCM
Microsoft ADPCM
MPEG Layer-3
PCM
Windows Media Audio V1
Windows Media Audio V2

Please advise what he can do to get the missing formats and to be same formats that I have.

Try having him install this to get MPEG Layer-3: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...how_Filter.htm
Also, are you using Vista or XP? I see your friend is on Vista Home Basic.

I am on XP Pro for now, but will be switching to a newer desktop which is Vista Business or Ultimate version.

Would that cause the difference?

That might explain some of the differences, yes, but the link I supplied should add MPEG Layer-3. Alternatively, he might want to try picking Wave-mp3 instead of compressed WAV.
