converting wma to mp3 ?no codecs for wma?

    Error converting to mp3 (Lame), 'D:\My Music\Kutless\Self Titled (Kutless)\Again.wma' to 'D:\My Music\Kutless\Self Titled (Kutless)\Again.mp3'
Error: Unable to load decoder for file type '.wma', codec not installed? visit 'Codec Central'. [dBCoreConverter::dBCoreConverter]

This was my error message? My WMP 11 plays wma so how can I not have the codec? I went to codec central and downloaded the codec but as I did this my antivirus software detected a virus and immediately quarantined it. I dont know how or why. Please help.

Your anti-virus is being overzealous because the codec comes in an .exe file. Turn off antivirus to download and install the WMP codec, then restart the anti-virus after you have finished installation.

Thank you xoas..... Can you help me understand though how it is WMP can play the wma files if it didn't already have the codec?

The WMA codec for WMP applies for the WMP program only. Say you have WinAMP installed and you have a WinAmp codec for FLAC installed. This would not have any meaning for dBpowerAMP Music Converter. It needsd its own codec. Likewise if you have dMC with a FLAC codec installed this would not help WinAMP (or WMP) play the FLAC files you create with dMC.

I hope that this will make things cleareer for you. If not, please feel free to ask for more clarification.

        Best wishes,
        Bill

dMC uses its own codecs to decode and encode files. Most AV programs use their own codecs, WMP just uses the codecs in the OS.

Thank you so much.... While half of what you said was foreign to me as many of these things are new to me, I kind of understand... now for the next problem....Everytime I go to install the wma codec I get three error messages.. something about cannot run local~temp... blah blah, blah. and 2 other similar messages.... these errors I was unable to print. any idea?

Did you disable your antivirus software when you ran it?

After uninstalling all and reinstalling everything I only got 2 error messages this time during installation.... as follows: C:\DOCUME~1\daniel~1.ril\locals~1\temp\ins18c.tmp. exe
                Error message #2 :
                C:\DOCUME~1\daniel~1.ril\locals~1\temp\ins18f.tmp. exe

Okay..... It's working now... but I'm still curious as to whether those errors are going to affect anything.....?

No, if it installed now you should be fine. Can you convert from WMA now?
