mp3 to m4b audio book - please help

When I try and convert an unprotected mp3 to m4b format to play on my ipod as an audiobook the resulting file is quite a bit less than the lenth of the original.

    ex:

    File size: 73,428kb
    Type: mp3
    Duration: 2:32:37
    Sample Rate: 44.1
    Sample Size: 16bit
    Bit Rate: 3283Kbps

after I convert to m4b: (conversion settings: CBR, 128Kbps, Force LC AAC, to original foler) converts it way too fast also. This is what I end up with:

    File size: 2,929kb
    Type: m4b
    Duration: 2:58
    Sample Rate: 44.1
    Sample Size: 16bit
    Bit Rate: 131Kbps

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

-will the next version of dbpoweramp have an mp3 file merge feature?

Yes, I can use itunes/vlc/media player all can play the mp3 and give it the correct length. The mp3 did start out as small parts and I used MP3 Splitter and Joiner Pro to combine them into one mp3. But like I said it plays fine and shows all of it's information correctly. It is only when I try to convert it to m4b that I get this outcome.

I tried converting it to AAC and ogg with the same outcome.

I would say it is failing where it was split, our codec will read the gapless information from a lame header and decode the exact amount, if you add another mp3 to the end it is not deoded.
