Problems (bugs) in ripper 12.4??

I just upgraded to 12.4 and I'm having problems.

When I rip a CD, after the disc gets ejected and I insert a second CD, I get all tracks with an error message. Kill and restart the ripper, and it works fine - Accurate rip and all.

The error messages all look like the ones pasted below.

I have only tried this with a few CDs so far, so the pattern isn't confirmed for certain.

Any suggestions?? thnx,

Well, further experimentation shows that I may not have all the details correct. Certainly killing and restarting the ripper is needed, but I'm not sure what conditions cause the problems.

It's hard to believe that its a CD quality problem, since every track is almost immediately tagged as being in error.

Which Windows version do you have? which communication method is selected in options?

I had a very similar error yesterday that actually blew the Plextor 755 out of the Windows Hardware Device manager. My machine is rock solid and I have had no problems with other programs. I recently purchased 12.4 Ref. and over the last week or so I have processed about 200 CDs (about 20 per day interspersed with office work). I had no problems until yesterday.

I use:
XP Pro
SCSI Through (SPT)
Secure
Maximum Ultra passes 6
Maximum Frame Re-read 34

The Error log extract is below. The first four tracks ripped fine but the fifth track went into re-rip Frame (9100 times according to the log) and then error messaged the rest of the tracks as unable to read the CD.

When I saw the errors, I quit the db program and started it again but the program could not see the Plextor drive. The drive was also missing from Windows hardware manager and “My computer”. So I restarted the machine and the drive was back. I visually inspect each CD before I insert it and this CD looked perfect before and when I removed the CD it still looked perfect.

I’ve ripped about 20 more CD’s with db and no problems. I also tested the drive and CD with Plextools and there are no C2 errors and the average C1 was below 20 with no spikes in track 6.

CD Drives can 'go funny' when they encounter real errors on the CD, normally Windows reverts the DMA mode (internal method of communication with the drive) to PIO mode (much slower), it could be on some systems when PIO mode kicks in, the drive disappears!

Is it so that when said error message occurs on a single track only, then the CD is too damaged to be read even with all "Secure Rip Abort" settings set to "no abort" and the "Interpolate" box checked?

Yes, that sounds like it is the case, if the error is with one track on the CD. You can try dMC r13 to see if you get any better results. Just install r13 over your current version and tell it to NOT uninstall the previous version
