dbPowerAmp has no codecs for MPEG Layer-3 and Lame MP3 is too large

Hi, Spoon;
I've written about this before and I'm still finding the same problem with the codecs. I went to compress an MP3 to wav format and the codec I use is no longer there, not only that but the MPEG LAYER-3 format would not stay locked in, instead it wanted to change to Lame MP3. I usually use a setting of 8,000 kBit/sec, 11,025 Hz,Mono 0 Kb/sec to convert my music down, but can't as that codec is gone now and all I have are ABR or CBR codecs which are far too large, when they finish converting. I've uninstalled everything now twice and can't get the proper codec to come back up. It's like it was never there at all and I can't find the MPEG LAYER-3 codec in codec central either. Can someone please tell me how to fix this.

Lame is a MPEG-Layer3 codec ... And the MPEG-Layer3 standard support both CBR and VBR. And btw constant bitrate 8,000 kBit/sec, 11,025 Hz will give the same size no matter what codec you choose....

Edit: 8,000 kilobit/sec * 180sec = 175.78125 megabyte

So no matter the codec, a 3 minute song at 8000 kbit/sec will become 175 megabyte.

Pick Wave from the drop-down menu and select "Wave-mp3". Is that what you are looking for?

If LtData's advice does not work, try picking Wave from the drop-down menu, select Compressed, click on Settings, then open the Format menu and select MPEG Layer 3 and see if that has the settings you are looking for.

The problem is that there is NO 8,000 kBit/sec, 11,025 Hz, 0 Kb/sec at all under the MPEG LAYER-3, This is the setting I was using to convert MP3's to wave format. Also, the MPEG LAYER-3 format will not stay set. It's now on LAME MP3 and everytime I set it to MPEG LAYER-3 it automatically shifts back to LAME MP3, and all the wavs are coming in between 250 and 560 Kb or higher in size. This is the second time that this has happened to me and even uninstalling and removing everything from the registry and the computer, then reinstalling it has made no effect. There are no settings like the one I described above, all settings are now either ABR or CBR. I can open the compressed settings up and there is no setting like the one above any where to be seen, in fact as I have mentioned there are NO normal settings like that anywhere now they are all ABR or CBR.

May I ask why you are converting Mp3 to wav? And why do you want 8000kbit/sec if you want small files? oh and CBR just means Constant Bit Rate, which 8,000kbit/sec is. So the Wave-mp3 setting is what I believe you want, all that bothers you is that it says LAME instead of MPEG-layer3. But LAME is just a name, it is still an MPEG-Layer3 encoder/decoder.

Hello, Lt. Data; I'm using version 12.3 of dBPowerAmp. I had the same problem happen in version 11.5 and thought it was fixed in this version but I guess it isn't.

I usually convert MP3's to waves so they take less space on my computer. I had the same songs in MP3 and they took up over a gig in space whereas the waves only come to something like 30 Mbs. I'm not converting waves to MP3, but the other way around and the settings I use are 8 kBit/sec, not 8,000 kBit, my mistake there, 11,025 HZ, Mono, 0 kb/sec and they convert the MP3's down to between 130 and 150 Kb in size as opposed to 2 or 3 MBs in size. The file format that works best for this is the MPEG LAYER-3 and the LAME MP3 makes them a tad larger than that but it's just an annoyance to have to keep playing games with the program.

MPEG LAYER-3 under the wave compression section is a Windows ACM codec, Microsoft used to install this depending on which programs were used, such as Netmeeting.

I tried the Windows ACM codec and when I did the LAME MP3 codec vanished all together like it never existed. Now I'm not sure what the heck is going on, but it seems like dBPowerAmp doesn't like me, lol. I mean, so far it's lost my MPEG LAYER-3 compression codecs leaving only the ABR and CBR ones. Now it's taken away the LAME MP3 one as well.

dBpoweramp would not change the ACM codecs on your system, like I said, you tend to have to install a Microsoft program which uses that ACM codec to get it.

Wave-mp3 is not an ACM codec, select 'compressed' on the main page.
