converting .cda files

I was wondering is the only way to convert a .cda file directly from a music CD. I was sent some .cda files via email, and have saved them to my local drive and have tried to convert them to wav or mp3 but I get the following error message.

The file Track01.cda' could not be opened.
Track 1 not found on CD Disc

Any info is appreciated.

.cda are pretend files, if you look at the size of them they are only 44 bytes long. A real audio track is about 40,000,000 bytes long.
