decoding Real Audio .ra files crashes in XP

    Hi

I downloaded both the decoder and encoder for the real audio files. I have also the PowerAMP installed. Everytime I try to convert the .ra files, it starts and then it crashes. I am running XP and I have tried re installing and rebooting several times.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here is the error message I get.

MusicConverter.exe has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

    AppName: musicconverter.exe AppVer: 4.0.0.52

I don't have the real player installed. The whol point for me was so I don't need to install the real audio player. Do I need to do that?

          ok Thanks,

you might want to add a note regarding that requirement in the Real Audio Codec download page

Do I also need to instal that player if I just want to encode into .ra-files?
on my machines (NT4.0 and Win98), all tries crashed until now.

I have exactly the same problem although I have RealPlayer version 10.5 installed.

You either use the old real media codec and need rela Player or Real One, or use the DirectShow filters and have Real Alternative. But you cannot have both Real player (or Real One) AND Real Alternative installed at the same time.

I have RealPlayer installed and use the DirectShow codecs, what am I doing wrong? I have to the best of my recollection neither Real One nor Real Alternative installed.

If you want to use the DirectShow codecs, you must have Real Alternative installed. Real Player is needed for the old real-time codec.

                        That's a conflict.

If you are using Real Player (or Real One) then you may only use the old real media decoding codec (that runs in real time) and you may not use DirectShow since that requires Real Alternative which does not cohabit with either Real player or Real One.

In order to use DirectShow you need to uninstall Real Player and the old real media code.

Then install real Alternative and the Directshow codec and the required filters (.ra, .rm) when you get to that step.

The problem is some real media files are only decodable using the old real media codec. Other are only decodable using Directshow. Others are decodable using both and others are not decodable using either.
