Different file size when using DMC R12.3 and R11.5

    Dear all,

I converted my cd in Flac format using the version R11.5 and after I Did the same thing using R12.3.

Files size are smaller with R12.3.

    Do you know why ?

    How big is the difference?
This could be explained by either using different FLAC settings, by differences in FLAC encoding between the 2 codecs, or by different tag sizes (or by a combination of these factors). You can check by ripping the same track to both codecs at the same FLAC setting without tags and you can compare the compression rates of the paired file(s) you have already ripped to try to narrow down where the differences are likely to be found.

    Best wishes,
    Bill

Newer versions of FLAC are more efficient.

Re: Different file size when using DMC R12.3 and R11.5

concerning the settings of dbpoweramp CD Ripper, I used on both "compression level 0 (Fast)".

        1° file using R11.5
        The flac file is:
        Size 53,4 MB (56.094.631 byte)
Size on disk 53,4 MB (56.094.720 byte)
Audio properties size 53,5 MB (74% of original, 1 to 1 compression)
        Original size 71,33 MB
Encoder FLAC reference libFLAC 1.1.2 20050205

        2° file using R12.3
        The flac file is:
        Size 53,4 MB (56.065.959 byte)
Size on disk 53,4 MB (56.066.048 byte)
Audio properties size 53,47 MB (74% of original, 1 to 1 compression)
        Original size 71,33 MB
Encoder FLAC reference libFLAC 1.2.0 20070715

Then I converted both file to wave using R12.3

        The 1° Wave file is:
        Size 71,3 MB (74.793.776 byte)
Size on disk 71,3 MB (74.797.056 byte)
Audio properties size 71,33 MB (100% of original, 1 to 1 compression)
        Original size 71,33 MB
        Encoder Settings PCM

        The 2° Wave file is:
        Size 71,3 MB (74.793.810 byte)
Size on disk 71,3 MB (74.797.056 byte)
Audio properties size 71,33 MB (100% of original, 1 to 1 compression)
        Original size 71,33 MB
        Encoder Settings PCM

R12 will write wave list tags, install the Reference Codec pack, it has an [calculate audio crc] utility codec which will determine if the audio data is identical, try on all files, if the CRC matches the audio data is the same, bit for bit.

            Hi Spoon,

I did what you said but I don't know how to read the two txt files, I mean there is no byte size or whatever .......

            Files results are as follow:

            CRC32 MD5 Filename 1F7C017C 4A3374D99F93D82998CC5110E2552B6D
            C:\Documents and Settings\RE_32.DOMAIN\Desktop\Guns 'N Roses - Knockin' On Heavens Door.wav

            CRC32 MD5 Filename 1F7C017C 4A3374D99F93D82998CC5110E2552B6D
C:\Documents and Settings\RE_32.DOMAIN\Desktop\Guns 'N Roses - Knockin' On Heavens Door (Live One In A Million 1991).wav

            Thank youuuuuu

Byte size does not really mean anything when R12 uses ID Tags for wave files and R11.5 does not. It is like comparing 2 mp3 files, one with ID Tags and one without, they could both be the same audio file, but different sizes.

The results above show the audio data is identical in both files.

                Hello Spoon,

I'm happy to understand that the two files are identical, but I didn't understand what you said:

                - R12.3 can keep ID tags from the original flac file while R11.5 cannot. Can you please explain to me ? and also, I knew that Aiff can have tags but Wave not, am I wrong ?

                Thank youuuuuu

Wave can also have ID Tags.
