Conversion Bit Rate differs from selected.

    Need some help, please!

When I convert a file, right click on mouse, etc...
I select MP3 LAME (ABR) 160kbps, the task completes itself.
When I look at the file in the folder it's Bit Rate shows a higher value in the explorer Bit Rate column(256kbps the first time from WMA to MP3 and then 320kbps the second time when I try to convert the MP3 file down to 160kbps). If I look at the ID. tags with a mouseover it reads Bit Rate 157kbps.

    Really confused?
    Thank You

Re: Conversion Bit Rate differs from selected.

If you are converting to mp3 at a setting of 160 kbs ABR (for Average Bitrate) the resulting file will have some frames greater than 160 kbs, some lower than 160 kbs, and some at 160 kbs. It is just that they average should be very close. The ID tags on mouseover (which are read and provided by dMC) should be accurate and the 157 kbs should represent the actual average bitrate for your file (using the same setting on a number of files should yield somewhat different results from one file to the next with the average coming close to 160 kbs).

I believe that the information you are reading in Windows Explorer is inaccurate and I think I recall reading that this is a known limitation of Windows Explorer in reporting bitrates for ABR and VBR files. (I am sure that if I am mistaken on this, that one of our more expert readers will set us straight).

    Best wishes,
    Bill

Windows Explorer is known to have problems with the bitrates of VBR/ABR mp3 files.
